How it actually works

Three tiny steps.
One less voice.

The extension uses genuine private audio controls in your browser. The only slightly odd part is matching a person to the audio lane that is currently carrying their voice.

STEP 01 — SET UP

Start the controls

Open the extension and click Set up audio controls for this call. Then use the small in-call panel to start private audio controls. This happens once per call.

STEP 02 — IDENTIFY

Find the voice

Choose the person’s name and ask them to speak alone. Their blue activity bar will move. Click This is [name] on that bar.

STEP 03 — MUTE

Enjoy the silence

That card now shows the person’s name. Click Mute locally. They keep talking; only your browser stops playing that lane.

Why the matching step? Google Meet supplies several reusable audio lanes but does not tell Chrome which lane belongs to which name. If people join, leave, or alter microphone state, check the blue bar again and use Forget name to identify it anew.
Use it without guesswork

The 30-second routine

Once setup is complete, your audio lanes remain visible in the extension popup for the rest of the Meet call. A labeled card gives you a clear mute, unmute, and forget-name control.

If you want to return everything to normal, choose Stop and restore audio. The extension restores the original Meet audio playback in your browser.

  1. Join a Google Meet call with at least one other person.
  2. Open Muteastupidcolleague and complete the one-time setup.
  3. Choose the speaker, watch the blue bars, and name the moving one.
  4. Use Mute locally whenever their contribution has reached its natural conclusion.

Download the release, unzip it somewhere permanent, then load the muteastupidcolleague folder from chrome://extensions with Developer mode enabled.
